This was the famous call in the waning seconds of the 1980 Olympics as the United States hockey team defeated the Soviet Union 4 - 3. Two days later the US team came from behind to defeat Finland and win the gold medal.
The Soviet team had won 5 of the previous 6 Olympic Gold medals and only one year earlier defeated a team of NHL All Stars 6 - 0 to win the Challenge Cup.
But this is not a story of college scrubs defeating the world's greatest hockey power through luck or determination. The US Team had talent - 13 of 20 players later made it to the NHL and 5 became All Stars. And it had great coaching - Head Coach Herb Brooks was widely recognized as an innovator and master motivator.
The players attributed the miracle to two factors:
- The team was well prepared entering the games
- And the players took ownership of Coach Brooks' game plan
